Stop Paying to Haul away Old Appliances: Here’s how to earn instead!
If you have ever had to replace an appliance, you would know that most Big Box stores, such as Home Depot, and Lowes, charge up to $50 to remove each appliance when they install a new one.
What you might not know is that most Electric Companies have a recycling program that will pay you to have them remove older appliances (Refrigerators, freezers, and window Air Conditioners).
There may be some conditions, like it still powers on and works (it doesn’t need to work great). They offer free removal and the $ rebates are usually credited to your electric bill or mail you a check.
Coordinating the removal of an old appliance with the delivery of a new one can be a little tricky. I would suggest scheduling the removal of the older appliance first, then scheduling the delivery of the new appliance. If you cannot get the removal of the older one before the new appliance is delivered, ask the installers if they could move the older appliance to the garage or somewhere out of the way. TIPPING goes a long way when asking for favors, besides the fact they are doing the back-breaking work.
Keep in mind you many need to power the older appliance as proof before the electric company will remove the appliance. I was able to move the refrigerator just outside the garage the day the recycling crew came to pick up. I ran an extension cord for power to prove it was working. This way I did not need to be home when they came to pick it up. Just make sure to notify them before doing this to make sure it is okay.
